Maid injured in fall

Every week there are articles like this in the daily newspapers in Kuwait...
Maid injured in fall: A Sri Lankan maid has been admitted to the Mubarak
Al-Kabeer Hospital with fractures and bruises all over the body, reports Al-Rai
Al-Aam daily. It has been reported the maid fell to the ground while attempting
to escape from the second floor of the maids recruiting office in Hawalli. A
case has been registered against the maid.
(my italics)

This was in today's Arab Times. As I posted the other day, a maid's recruiting office is often no better than a modern day slave trader. Often these agents hold a number of prospective maids locked up in a back room so they can't escape to their embassies, and then they have maids on hand to present to prospective employers who don't want to wait to import and sponsor a maid. And to show you where the power lies in this arrangement, it's the maid who is prosecuted for escaping her master.

This is not a isolated case... this happens daily, whether a maid is escaping from her her sponsor/employer, an agent or someone who has picked her up off the street and offered her a better life, only to drive her to a deserted place... If we can read about it in the papers everyday, what is the number of stories that aren't publicised?

Just out of curiousity, is the sole purpose of your Blog to slate the country in which you currently reside? Freedom of speech aside, yes thie country has some disturbing news, but for a middle eastern country im quite impressed that such news is made public and not "swept under the mat". Yes humain rights stink, yes abuse is rife, but then again its no worse than alot of the crap that happens in the US, UK or any other developed country. I was watching Sky news last week to see a mother with her toddler in a pram was stabbed in her neck by a random passer by. What on earth is all that about?

Anyways, im far from contesting that Kuwait is not messed up, it is, but so is the lovely world that we live in! For a start look at your corner of the world, The Aussies and their racial disputes with the aborigines are disgraceful. Riots, beatings and countless abuses... and the abs are the ppl who are the NATIVES!

So anyways... just thought i would stir up the broth... :) enjoy

My blog, I unashamedly admit is a way of letting off steam and publicising the inequities in Kuwait, but also giving outsiders a picture of what it's like on the ground. I'm not saying anywhere's perfect! Yes, it's good that the local press is able to publish what they can... but there's a lot that they are unable to publish.

I totaly Agree With Kiwi, its not the Kuwaitis who are to blamed, but the Shameless Staffs in the Embassy who are internally filling there Pockets with the poor Helpless Stranded Maids, they only act like they do care , i have come across many cases of the maids which is not in record after the locally employed staffs have negotitaed with the Kuwaitis' (Money) so who is to be blamed??? surely our embassy staffs who use the poor maids for them to lead a luxury life,Had the Embassy Staffs maintained there standard, not a Kuwaiti , even the Kings of any land would not reach our maids.
